Through The Flames
After last night, I could not stay away from him, and there was very little I could do about it, even if I wanted to. Vampires are creatures who obsess, and Hudson is now firmly entrenched in my mindâmy heart. This is different than it ever has been. He is ingrained in me and haunts me every thought.
It scares me.
When I was a young man, before Nicolas saw me working our fields and decided he couldnât live without my beauty, I was what Armie would call a player. It was a different time, and in my community, we still held to the old ways. Ritualistic orgies around large fires to appease the gods or to welcome the change of seasons were the things I looked forward to. My lust as a young man was impossible to quench. Then Nicolas saw me as I worked shirtless in the field. He watched me for a week from the shadows, and he obsessed over his desire for me.
He was old even then, but time had frozen him as a young man who looked barely twenty. He crept into our barn, where I was putting down for the night to watch over what little livestock we had, and he took me. Then he took my life. We sped to the cave hidden by a white rose bush that he had been using for his home, and I drank from him, over and over, until he was barely alive.
Once you drink from the fountain of forever youth, your body craves it, and there is no way you can deny that thirst. My body rapidly changed, becoming the perfect specimen of what I could have always been. I worked hard, and my body was already lean and muscular from providing for my family. But with the change to my physical being, my mind stayed the same. The essence of who I was never left me. But change is inevitable.
I loved Nicolas. He was my maker and my only companion â my only lover. We spent centuries wandering the world and drinking from the fount of humanity. I loved him, but now I understand that we were never bound together â not our souls and hearts. It had been our need for companionship that kept us together â that kept me longing and missing him. All this time, I assumed it was love.
After meeting Hudson, I knew what it meant to feel the pull of meeting your other half. Last night â the thought of him and the hellhound â I had no choice but to give myself away. I heard him leave his house and couldnât stop myself from following him to make sure he was safe. A myriad of universes flashed through my mind as I watched the beast stalking him. Was this my fight? Why did I care? But at the last moment, right as I could see the beast tense, I knew why.
Hudson was mine. One day, if he wanted and things grew between us, I would invite him to be my eternal mate.
